Woodland Management
Woodland Management in Cumbria & the Lake District
Max Reynolds Tree Services provides professional woodland management services for private landowners, estates, farmers and conservation organisations across Cumbria, Lancashire and North Yorkshire. We combine practical forestry expertise with a deep understanding of the ecological and conservation value of Cumbria's woodlands — from ancient semi-natural woodland in the Lake District to productive mixed woodland and farm copses across South Lakeland and the Furness Peninsula.
What Does Woodland Management Involve?
Good woodland management is not simply about cutting trees down — it is about making informed, long-term decisions to improve the health, productivity and ecological value of your woodland. A well-managed woodland produces better timber, provides richer habitat for wildlife, is safer and more accessible, and is far more resilient to disease and storm damage than neglected woodland.
Our woodland management services include:
-
Woodland surveys & management plans — assessing the current state of your woodland and producing a practical plan for its future management
-
Selective thinning — removing suppressed, diseased or poorly formed trees to give the best trees space to develop
-
Coppice management — traditional coppicing on a rotation to encourage light, regeneration and diverse woodland structure
-
Veteran & ancient tree management — specialist care for veteran trees including deadwood retention, crown reduction and monitoring
-
Invasive species removal — removal of rhododendron, sycamore, cherry laurel and other invasive species threatening native woodland
-
Ash dieback management — safe felling and management of ash trees affected by Hymenoscyphus fraxineus across Cumbria
-
Ride and glade management — maintaining open rides, glades and woodland edges to maximise biodiversity
-
Restocking & planting — replanting felled or windblown areas with appropriate native or productive species
-
Fencing & deer protection — protecting regeneration and new planting from deer and livestock browsing
-
Timber extraction — safe extraction of harvested timber with minimal ground disturbance
Countryside Stewardship & Conservation Schemes
We have extensive experience delivering woodland management as part of government-funded agri-environment and forestry schemes, including Countryside Stewardship Woodland Management options. Max Reynolds has been involved in Butterfly Conservation areas, Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) management and woodland creation projects across Cumbria.
If you are considering entering your woodland into a Countryside Stewardship scheme, or are already in a scheme and need a contractor to carry out the management prescriptions, we can advise on the options and carry out the work to the required standards.
Ash Dieback in Cumbria
Ash dieback (Chalara) is a significant and growing problem across Cumbria and the Lake District, with large numbers of ash trees in decline or already dead across the region. We carry out systematic ash dieback surveys and phased felling programmes for landowners, estates and local authorities, working safely and efficiently to manage the risk before trees become dangerously unstable.
Ancient Woodland in the Lake District & South Lakeland
Cumbria contains some of England's finest ancient semi-natural woodland — oak and hazel woodland on the Lake District fells, alder woodland along river valleys, and limestone ash-woodland on the Carboniferous limestone of South Lakeland. We understand the particular sensitivities of managing these habitats and always work in consultation with Natural England, the Lake District National Park Authority and other relevant bodies where required.
