How Much Does Tree Surgery Cost in Cumbria? An Honest Guide to Pricing

We are asked about cost on almost every enquiry we receive, often as the very first question, before any other details have been discussed. That is entirely understandable. Tree surgery can be expensive, the pricing is not always obvious, and there is a reasonable concern about being quoted wildly different prices by different contractors without understanding why.

We try to be as transparent as possible about how we price work. This article sets out the main factors that affect the cost of tree surgery in Cumbria, gives some honest guidance on what typical jobs cost, and explains why the cheapest quote is not always the best value. None of the figures here are fixed prices for your job, because every tree and every situation is different, but they should give you a reasonable framework for understanding what you are being quoted.

Why Tree Surgery Pricing Varies So Much

Tree surgery pricing varies considerably between quotes for the same job, and between different jobs that look similar on the surface. The main factors that drive this variation are:

The size of the tree. This is the most obvious factor. A small ornamental tree that can be pruned from the ground in two hours costs very differently from a mature oak that requires an aerial climber, extensive rigging and a full day of two operatives. Size includes both height and crown spread, and both matter for the time and skill required.

Access to the site. A tree in an open garden with good vehicle access, where arisings can be chipped and driven away efficiently, is considerably cheaper to work on than the same tree in a confined back garden accessible only through the house, or on a steep fell-side with no vehicle access. Access challenges add time and complexity to every aspect of the job.

The proximity of the tree to structures, utilities or other obstacles. A tree in open ground can often be felled in sections in a straightforward way. A tree directly over a conservatory, adjacent to a power line or growing in a tight space between buildings requires more complex rigging, more time and more skilled aerial work. This is why two trees of similar size can produce very different quotes.

What happens to the arisings. Chipping and removing all arisings from site is a significant part of the cost of many jobs. If you are able to take the logs and have the chippings left on site, this reduces the overall cost. Most clients in Cumbria want a clean site at the end of a job, and the cost of waste removal is a legitimate part of the quote.

Whether the tree has a Tree Preservation Order. TPO work requires an application to the council, a period of waiting for determination, and the administration that goes with that. We handle this for our clients, but it adds to the overall cost and the timescale. See our TPO page for more information.

The time of year. Tree surgery is in higher demand from autumn through to spring, which is also the safest time to carry out most work. In peak periods, the cost of the job itself does not change, but waiting times may be longer.

Rough Guide to Typical Job Costs in Cumbria

These figures are indicative only and are based on our experience of pricing jobs across South Lakeland and the wider Cumbrian area. They assume reasonable access and straightforward arisings disposal. Your quote may differ significantly depending on the specific circumstances of your tree and site.

Crown reduction of a medium-sized garden tree, roughly eight to twelve metres tall, with straightforward access: typically in the range of two hundred and fifty to five hundred pounds, depending on the extent of the reduction and the time required.

Felling a small garden tree of up to approximately six metres with a straightforward site: typically one hundred and fifty to three hundred pounds including stump treatment or basic stump clearance.

Felling a large tree of fifteen metres or more, with adequate access and no significant proximity issues: typically from five hundred pounds upwards, potentially significantly more for very large trees or those requiring complex rigging.

Deadwood removal from a mature tree: typically one hundred and fifty to three hundred and fifty pounds depending on the size of the tree and the extent of the deadwood.

Hedge trimming, for a typical domestic garden hedge of ten to fifteen metres length: typically eighty to two hundred pounds depending on the height and the accessibility of both sides.

We want to be clear that these are rough guides for planning purposes, not quotes. We always visit the site before providing a price, because we have seen jobs that looked simple from a description turn out to be considerably more complex when we arrived, and vice versa.

Why the Cheapest Quote is Not Always the Best Value

This is something we feel strongly about and want to be direct on. Tree surgery done badly, by unqualified or uninsured operatives, carries real risks: to the tree itself through poor pruning technique, to your property through inadequate rigging and control of falling timber, and to you legally if an uninsured operative is injured on your property.

The Employers Liability Compulsory Insurance Act 1969 and the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 place responsibilities on employers and on those commissioning work. If you hire an uninsured contractor who is injured on your property, the legal position is potentially complex and you may face liability you were not aware of.

A price that seems very low compared to other quotes may reflect the absence of insurance, the absence of qualifications, the intention to leave arisings on site, or simply the intention to do less work than specified. Ask for the insurance certificate and the qualifications before accepting any quote, regardless of price.
